Your Rx is what an ophthalmologist (an MD) or optometrist (a doctor of optometry) provides to correct your vision with a pair of eyeglasses with corrective lenses.

Here is a list of some optical abbreviations that will help you order your glasses from OwnGlasses:

ADD(also NV-ADD): The Near Vision (NV) Reading ADDition correction on a multifocal Rx. Can be used for bifocal or progressive glasses, or for single-vision reading or computer (intermediate) vision glasses.

AR: Anti-Reflective. A coating that reduces reflection on the lenses.

AXIS: The angle at which the Cylinder (CYL) is placed on a lens to correct astigmatism. It ranges from 1 to 180.

BAL: The Rx calls for balance lenses, meaning the same Rx for each eye. Often used when a person has no sight in one eye, so both lenses will have the same thickness.

BD, BI, BO, BU: A prism correction on your Rx (may be indicated with Δ, and one of these four abbreviations. The B stands for the base, and it could be base down (BD), based in (BI), base out (BO), or base up (BU).

CYL: The Cylinder. Combined with the CYL corrects astigmatism.

DS: The abbreviation for. An eye dr. may write DS on an Rx in the field if no astigmatism correction is needed.

DV: Distance vision.

FT: Flat-top bifocal.

NV: Near vision.

NV-ADD (also ADD): The Near Vision (NV) Reading ADDition correction on a multifocal Rx. Can be used for bifocal or progressive glasses, or for single-vision reading or computer (intermediate) vision glasses.

OD: Latin for Oculus Dexter, meaning the right eye.

OS: Latin for Oculus Sinister, meaning the left eye.

OU: Latin for Oculus Uterque, meaning each eye.

PAL: Progressive Addition (or Adjustment) Lens: sometimes on a Progressive Rx an eye dr. will write two different numbers for the NV-ADD, perhaps +2.25 and +2.50, to increase the reading power in the NV-ADD for Progressive lenses.

PD (Pupillary Distance): The PD is the measurement of the distance between your pupils. This is needed for the manufacturer of the eyeglasses to know where to place the optical center on each lens, so you can see well with the glasses.

PL: Plano. Latin for "flat." If this is in the SPH section of an Rx, it means no nearsighted or farsighted correction is needed.

RX: A prescription.

SPH: The first section on an Rx. It corrects nearsighted or farsighted vision.

UV: The abbreviation of ultraviolet. The UV light is invisible to the human eye, but it is UV light that gives us a sunburn, and too much exposure to it can damage the eye. All of the lenses OwnGlasses offers come with 100 percent UV protection, for free.

VA: Visual acuity: how well the eye can see. Sometimes this may be written on an Rx, with a number such as 20/20. This would indicate that with eyeglasses made to this, the vision would be corrected to 20/20 vision.

Your pupillary distance (PD) is the measurement of the distance between your pupils.

Am I a single PD or dual PD?

A single PD it is the measurement, in millimeters, from the center of one pupil to the center of the other.

A dual PD is the measurement of the center of each pupil to the center of the bridge of your nose.

Single-vision Rx:

Up to -20.00 or +12.00 on the Sphere (SPH)

Up to + or - 6.00 on the Cylinder (CYL).

Bifocal Rx:

Up to -9.00 or +6.00 on the SPH.

Up to + or - 6.00 on the CYL.

Up to +3.50 on the NV-ADD.

Progressive Rx:

Up to -10.00 or +8.00 on the SPH.

Up to + or - 6.00 on the CYL.

Up to +3.50 on the NV-ADD.

Prism (single-vision only):

Up to 5.00 in any direction.

Most people have an astigmatism. If you have an astigmatism on your Rx, we can make glasses that will correct it.

Yes! We offer both. If you have ADD or NV-ADD on your Rx, you can get lined bifocals or unlined progressive glasses.

If you have a glasses prescription with an NV-ADD, it is best to order Prescription Reading Glasses. If you do not have a glasses prescription and typically buy reading glasses from the drugstore, you may consider Over the Counter Reading Glasses.

Prescription Reading Glasses

It is easy to reconfigure an Rx with an NV-ADD. It just involves a little grade-school arithmetic.

You simply take the NV-ADD number on your Rx and add it to the numbers in your Sphere (SPH) category for each eye. Then lower your distance PD by 3 millimeters if it's the single PD, by 1.5 millimeters for each eye if it's the dual PD. That gives you an Rx for single-vision reading glasses!

 How to convert prescription into reading glasses prescription

If you are used to buying reading glasses over the counter from the drugstore, you can easily buy them from WhereLight as well – with even more benefits.

Start by picking your favorite frame. Once you know your recommended reading power (such as +2.00), select “Single Vision” as the Prescription Type, and enter the same power for each eye in the Sphere (SPH) category. Do not enter a value in the CYL, Axis, or Prism boxes. You’ll need to lower your distance Single PD by 3 millimeters.

Sorry, a contact lens Rx can only be used for contact lenses.

It's super easy to order glasses from OwnGlasses! After clicking on the Order Glasses button, select Non-Prescription at the Prescription Type drop-down window. During the ordering process, you can also choose our Beyond UV Blue Blocker lenses and/or add anti-reflective coatings.

We strongly recommended that you get an eye exam every two years, or more frequently if you notice that your vision has changed.

The Lens Index number (1.50, 1.57, 1.53, 1.59, 1.61, 1.67, or 1.74) refers to the degree of refraction the lens provides. This means how much the light that enters the lens is refracted (bent) as it passes through the lens. Lens Index is also related to the thickness of the lens. The higher the index, the thinner the lens will be. People with higher prescriptions should choose high-index lenses.

The lens that is preselected as a recommended option in ② Your Lenses during the ordering process will be the best option for your Rx. If you have a strong Rx, a higher lens index number will give you a thinner lens.

All OwnGlasses eyeglasses come with Anti-Scratch Coating and UV Protection Coating that are both absolutely free. We also offer Anti-Reflective (also known as Anti-Glare) Coatings, which reduce reflection on the lenses and the glare you see while you are wearing your glasses.

Photochromic lenses are specially treated to turn dark when exposed to UV light. When the lenses are out of the sunlight, they become clear again. We carry the Transitions® brand of photochromic lenses for our 1.50, 1.61, and 1.67 lenses, for both single-vision and progressive glasses.

A Polarized lens is a sunglass lens that greatly reduces the glare from light that is Polarized horizontally, meaning the light reflecting off horizontal surfaces, such as a white sidewalk, a white-sand beach, snow, or sunlight reflecting on the water.

Polycarbonate lenses are impact resistant, and are stronger and more lightweight than standard lenses, which makes them a great option for kids’, rimless, and sports glasses, or for anyone who is rough on their glasses.

Trivex® lenses are impact resistant, and are stronger and more lightweight than standard lenses, which makes them a great option for kids’, rimless, and sports glasses, or for anyone who is rough on their glasses. Compared with polycarbonate lenses, Trivex® is a premium material that provides crisper vision and is 10% lighter.

Call or chat with us within the first 30 days after you've received the glasses. If the frame is defective, we can send you a new one. If you picked a frame that's too big or too small, you can send the glasses back for a partial refund or store credit to reorder a new pair of glasses in the correct size, and we'll explain how to make sure the next frame you get will fit you perfectly.

Some frames have a series of numbers printed on the inside of a temple arm (the part that goes behind your ear). The first numbers are typically the manufacturer’s style number and color code. But farther down the temple arm, there may be important numbers that refer to the dimensions of the frame. These numbers are the measurement, in millimeters, of the lens width, nose bridge width, and temple arm length. Often the lens width and nose bridge width are 2-digit numbers separated by a square, and a temple arm length is a 3-digit number in front of or behind the others. Knowing these numbers can help you choose a frame similar in size when shopping.

That's a decision that only you can make, but we can help! If you want a super-light frame, go with one that's 15 grams or lower. Titanium frames are generally very light. If you want a durable frame, go with stainless steel or memory titanium. If you are allergic to metals, stay away from metal alloy and memory titanium frames, both of which use nickel, an allergen. Stick with frames made of hypoallergenic materials, such as stainless steel or titanium.

Basically, go with a frame style that contrasts with your face shape, and that is scaled to fit your face. If you have a square face, go with an oval or round frame. If you have an oval or round face, go with a rectangular frame. If you have a heart-shaped face, go with a narrow, round, bottom-heavy frame.

Your Rx may be too strong for half-rim or rimless glasses, so full-rim would be your option. Full-rimglasses, especially in the nerd-chic look, are very popular. They are generally more durable than half-rimor rimless frames. Half-rim frames are great for people with slim faces. They show more of your face than full-rim frames, and are more durable than rimless glasses. Rimless glasses are great for people who will treat their glasses delicately, and who want their glasses to be practically invisible on their face.

Most of our frames come in one size, but not all. The details will be listed under the product description. Please use the size filter to find the one that best suits you.

Yes! If you choose Frame Only during checkout, it will be half the price listed. Many frames still come with retainer lenses (not of optical lens quality) to maintain frame integrity during shipping. They may be removed if desired.

Most of our come in more than one color. If it does, you will see the color swatches on the upper-left corner of the frame.

Yes. When a frame is out of stock, you will see an "out of stock" message below the frame. Enter your email address in the space provided, and we'll let you know when the item becomes available.

Yes! With a few exceptions, the Rx glasses you order on our website can be turned into Rx sunglasses. Just select a standard or gradient lens tint, or choose from our glare-reducing polarized lens selections.

Gray is the darkest and best tint color. Amber, at 80 percent darkness, is a nice dark brown that is good for sunglasses too, especially in a brown, gold, red, or tortoiseshell frame.

Sure! If you order Rx sunglasses, you can get the lens with the index that is recommended for your Rx to keep your lenses nice, light and thin. If you get non-Rx sunglasses, your lenses will be thin.

Most of the frames on our website can be ordered as sunglasses, except for some sports or goggle frames.

Photochromic lenses are clear when they are under shaded area, and turn darker in bright sunlight. Polarized lenses are permanent sunglasses that don't change color.

Yes, you can order as many pairs of glasses you like! Once you put a pair of glasses in the Shopping Cart, click on the Continue Shopping button on the bottom-left of the Shopping Cart page. Then order the next pair. Repeat until you have all the glasses you want to order. The shipping fee will be the same for most of the shipping methods, no matter how many pairs of glasses are on an order.

Absolutely not! You can order different pairs of glasses for your whole family on one order, with all different prescriptions.

Sorry, once an order has been placed you can't add more glasses. If you place another order going to the same address within the next 24 hours, either enter a note in the order stating “Combine shipping with order# XXX” or contact customer service. We’ll combine the two orders, ship them together and refund one shipping fee!

Yes! Log into your account and look up the previous order. If the frame is currently available, you will see the word Reorder next to the order number. Click on Reorder, and the exact same pair of glasses will be in your Shopping Cart.

It will go through five times of strict quality inspection before handing to you to ensure that you get a satisfactory product. However, something unexpected may happen, which will lead to the defect in your glasses. Please feel free to contact the customer service center, we will and be certain to deal with it appropriately to give you a pleasant purchasing experience.

I. If you receive a defective glasses(excluding caused by accident, improper treatment) within 90 days receipt of shipment. Please contact OwnGlasses Customer Service Center in time to request for a replacement. This warranty does not apply to normal wear and tear to the frames, lenses, or coatings. We will give you the discount coupon to buy another glasses on our website beyond 90 days receipt of shipment.

II. You have thirty (30) days from the date you receive the glasses to contact us if you want to refund or return them for any reason. Please refer to the following terms for the specific return privileges and refund policy.

1. Transport damage: We will replace broken frames at no charge or give a full refund.

2. Receive wrong glasses: We will replace wrong frames at no charge or give a full refund.

3. Defective glasses: Please contact OwnGlasses Customer Service Center, and we will replace or refund according to the actual situation.

4. Damaged within 30 days: We will remake and resend the glasses or offer coupons to change new glasses for material or technique reasons and you only need to pay the postage and price differences.

5. Uncomfortable glasses: If you cannot see clearly or feel uncomfortable after receiving the new glasses, please first check the prescription you uploaded because customers often fill in the wrong prescription. If your prescription is correct, please adjust your glasses according to the tips here. If it still causes uncomfortable wearing, please contact OwnGlasses Customer Service Center in time. We will properly deal with your problem and ensure a satisfactory shopping experience.

6. If the size is not suitable and cannot be worn normally due to your careless selection, you can measure the size of the frame you used before and contact the OwnGlasses Customer Service Center within 30 days after receiving the goods to obtain a proper solution.

7. If you don't like the glasses you bought, please contact OwnGlasses Customer Service Center within 30 days after receiving the glasses to get a discount coupon to buy new glasses, or apply for a refund (excluding freight and lens costs).

8. If you accidentally fill in the wrong prescription or choose the wrong lenses, please contact OwnGlasses Customer Service center for free change within 36 hours after payment; after 36 hours if the order has been processed or shipped, it cannot be changed.

1. All returned orders need to be kept in their original packaging(including glasses, glasses case, etc.) to ensure that they will not be crushed during transportation. You can keep other non-sale accessories as free gifts.

2. Properly package the returned items and attach your order information and a brief explanation for your return. If there is a prescription problem, please attach your latest prescription.

If you sent them back for inspection, we will inspect them and email you the inspection results. If you sent them back for refund or store credit, we will email you when we have processed the refund or the credit.

You can reorder the replacement frame, for half-price, on our website. Once you get the replacement frame, just swap the lenses out of the old frame and into the new one.

As part of PCI compliance, no refunds will be issued to any card other than the credit card used on the order. If you don’t have access to the credit card on the order, then the amount of the refund will be issued as a store credit only to the customer account used to place the order.
